High school seniors invited to financial aid event

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - High School Seniors are invited to the 2012 College Goal Sunday at West Kentucky Community and Technical College.

It will take place on January 29 in Crounse Hall from 2:00 p.m. until about 4:00 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Kentucky Association of Student Financial Aid Administration. It provides free help to families applying for college financial aid.

Students are encouraged to bring a parent or guardian to the event. They should also bring completed 2011 IRS 1040 tax returns and any other 2011 income and benefits information.

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - West Kentucky Community and Technical College will offer several Senior Learning for Fun classes.

The program is offered by Workforce Solutions at the college.

Clinic to change hours in March

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - There will be new hours for Baptist Express Care beginning on March 1st.

According to Western Baptist Hospital, the new hours for the clinic will be 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays.

The clinics are located inside the Walmart Supercenters on Hinkleville Road and Irvin Cobb Drive.

Baptist Express Care provides fast, affordable access to basic healthcare services like check-ups, vaccinations, screenings, and minor injuries. The clinic serves patients over 2 years old.

Patients are seen on a first come, first served basis without appointment.

Benton, Ky. man arrested on assault charge

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS)-

A Benton, Ky. man was arrested after police say he assaulted a man early Saturday morning at a bar and grill.

Michael D. Elder, 26, of Benton, Ky. was arrested on a charge of second-degree assault.

Witnesses told police that Elder and Aaron M. Severns, 28, of Paducah had a disagreement around 12:30 a.m. Saturday at the Star Bar and Grill. Police say the dispute turned physical and Severns was injured. They say Severns and Elder are acquaintances.

Severns was admitted to Lourdes Hospital for treatment. No word on his condition.

Police say they arrested Elder shortly before 8 a.m. after being interviewed by detectives.

He was taken to McCracken County Jail.

Investigators are asking witnesses of the incident to call Det. Matt Smith at 270-444-8553.

The investigation is continuing.

Ballard County man accused of trafficking marijuana

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS)-

A Ballard County man is accused of trafficking marijuana after getting a speeding ticket.

The traffic stop happened Friday shortly after 4 p.m. in McCracken County.

Carrington Byas, 22, of Ballard County was arrested and charged with trafficking marijuana (8 oz to 5 lbs), possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding 55 in a 25 zone.

Deputies say Byas' car was stopped after he was found speeding on Elmdale Road.

After searching his car, deputies say they found the marijuana.

Paducah police sergeant to be profiled in magazine

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - The Paducah Police Department says Sgt. George Johnson was nominated in September for an officer profile in the Kentucky Law Enforcement magazine.

Johnson was nominated by Capt. Jason Merrick and the profile will highlight his commitment to law enforcement, the Paducah Police Department and the community for many years. The nomination also highlighted his role as the Crisis Negotiation Team Leader, Verbal Judo Instructor, Special Events coordinator and his leadership role with the West Kentucky Crime-Stoppers programs.

The police department says the profiles are a new addition to the magazine and the KLE e-newsletter. Johnson's profile is expected to be in the next edition of the quarterly magazine.

Paducah man accused of DUI, fighting with an officer

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - A Paducah man was jailed after police say he fought a police officer and tried to take his gun.

Ronnie E. Crosby, 60, of Paducah was arrested on charges of driving without headlights, having no registration plates, driving with a suspended or revoked operator's license, having no insurance, driving under the influence (third offense), third-degree assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and attempting to disarm a police officer.

On Thursday shortly after 8:30 p.m., police say they stopped Crosby's pickup truck on Oscar Cross Avenue and South 6th Street for driving without headlights. Officers say the man got out of the truck and started to walk away before a police officer brought him back to the truck.
