Cross country team established for home school students

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - A local business has organized a cross country running team for home school athletes.

According to The Rehab Associates Foundation says 31 athletes between the ages of 5 and 18 make up the cross country team "Pacers."

The athletes are from Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois. The team trains twice a week with Scott Greene, a Speed and Agility Coach.

According to the group, the team members are also given "homework" running assignments on days they don't meet.

The team is not allowed to compete at local Kentucky High School Athletic Association meets because they're not students at a member school.

McCracken County Sheriff's Department warns of phone scam

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The McCracken County Sheriff's Department is warning residents of a scam using the department's name and phone number.

Several area residents have received a recorded message saying the call is from the sheriff's department telling them the resident has a traffic court fine due in court and it can be paid by credit card.

The caller ID shows the correct number for the sheriff's department and the number stated on the recording is also correct.  Police say a "spoof card" can be purchased in several locations and businesses.

The traffic court system does not work this way and the sheriff's department advises people the department will not make any phone calls.

This scam seems to be a follow up to one going around a few months ago in which some residents received notices through the mail that they owed traffic court fines in McCracken County.  It gave an address to mail payments and a phone number to

Two men injured in overnight house fire

A house fire in McCracken County overnight sends two man to the hospital.

It was around 1:15 Monday morning when the McCracken County Sheriff's Department was called out to 309 Calvert Drive in Reidland for a house fire. When they got there the home was engulfed in fire.

The sheriff's department says the homeowners and their dog escaped uninjured.

However, they were allowing a family to stay there because their house was lost during the flooding earlier this year.

Cecil Bowerman Sr., 71, was trapped in the home and rescued by his son, Buddy.

Both men were taken to Lourdes Hospital in Paducah with burns. Bowerman Sr. was listed in critical condition.

The son told investigators he found his father's bed on fire and believed that it started because his dad smokes while using his oxygen tank.
