PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - U.S. Rep. Ed Whitfield, Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Power welcomed members of the Paducah Chamber of Commerce to Washington, D.C. on Thursday.

“The primary focus of this year’s trip was to encourage the Department of Energy and Congress to authorize the re-enrichment of the uranium tails at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant,” said Glen Anderson, Board Chair.

Former Ft. Campbell soldier pleads not guilty to possession of child porn

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - U.S. Attorney David J. Hale with the Western District of Kentucky announced Thursday a former Fort Campbell soldier has been charged in a four-count Indictment with knowingly possessing, mailing, transporting and shipping child pornography while staying within the Fort Campbell Military Reservation during active duty in Iraq.

Hale said Timothy Lee Hansen, 25, appeared in U.S. District Court in Paducah on Wednesday and entered pleas of not guilty to the charges. Before his indictment, Hansen had been charged in a criminal complaint on July 19, 2011. During an earlier hearing, Chief United States District Judge Thomas B. Russell ordered Hansen detained without bond.

According to court records, between February 2010 and February 15, 2011, Hansen, also known as "Hydes420" allegedly used a "peer-to-peer" internet file sharing software to download, store and trade digital images of child pornography.

Urologist Donald Spicer to speak on da Vinci robot

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Western Baptist Hospital announced urologist Donald Spicer, M.D., will speak on da Vinci robotic surgery for prostate cancer at the next free Brunch Bunch.

The event will be Thursday, September 15 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the Baptist Heart Center Auditorium. Western Baptist says the da Vinci robot will be available for demonstrations.

Since Western Baptist became the first hospital in the area to offer da Vinci surgery in early 2009, Dr. Spicer has used it hundreds of times for prostate and kidney surgery. It is also used hysterectomy and throat cancer surgery.

Church vandalism under investigation

The McCracken County Sheriff's department is investigating vandalism at two churches in the area.

According to deputies, someone at Lone Oak Baptist Church noticed a window in the steeple was broken on September 5th. The church estimates the damage at $10,000.

Then, on September 9th, someone at Oaklawn Baptist church discovered a pane of stained glass had four holes in it. The church estimates the damage at $1,000.

A deputy said the department believes the windows were shot out with a gun or a pellet gun.

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Western Baptist Hospital's Baptist Health Line and StorkLine will be celebrating 15 years of providing free health information to callers.

Bonnie Bullard, R.N., a pediatric nurse for four decades, has been answering calls since the beginning. She said its StorkLine provides valuable information and great comfort to new parents.

“After the doctor’s office has closed, when it starts to get dark at night, and then fears come in, and children’s temperatures go up, we’re there,” said Bullard. “We’re nurses. We’re there 24/7 for anybody who needs us about any health care questions, and we want to serve you.

State police release the names of victims of a deadly wreck on I-24

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - All lanes are open in Interstate 24 after a deadly wreck Tuesday afternoon.

Public Transportation Officer Keith Todd says the crash on I-24 happened around 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The crash happened at mile point 8 just west of the US 45/US 62 interchange at Exit 7.

Both westbound and eastbound lanes were were temporarily closed to allow emergency access to the site of a crash.

According to Kentucky State Police, Ricky L. Morris, 51 years-old, of Benton was west bound on Interstate 24 at the 9 mile marker when witnesses say one of his tires blew on the GMC dump truck he was driving.

Morris's vehicle then veered into the passing lane hitting the car driven by Richard Toon, 47 years-old of Bardwell, KY.

Both Morris and Toon's vehicle then crossed the median into the east bound lanes of I-24.  Toon's car collided head-on with Chevy Malibu operated by Rickey W.

WKCTC named one of 10 finalists for $1 million Aspen prize fund

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - West Kentucky Community and Technical College was named one of the 10 finalist community colleges by the Aspen's Institute's College Excellence Program on Tuesday.

WKCTC now enters the last stage of the competition for the $1 million prize fund that will be awarded December in Washington, D.C. to the first-ever national winner and up to three runners-up.

This is the first national recognition of extraordinary accomplishments at individual community colleges, and follows on the April project launch and previous White House Community College Summit that attracted participation and endorsement from President Obama, as well as luminaries in American education, labor, business and civil society.

“West Kentucky works hard to make sure students learn and are prepared for jobs, and it shows,” said Josh Wyner, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute’s College Excellence Program.
