PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Western Baptist Hospital will be hosting a sibling class on Tuesday, June 28.

The free class will be from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Atrium Classroom, Doctors Office Building 2.

According to the hospital, it helps children ages two to nine prepare for the arrival of a new brother or sister.

Western Baptist blood drive recognized by Red Cross

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Two Western Baptist Hospital employees have been recognized by the American Red Cross.

Lab Director Debbie Taffer and Lab Coordinator Cindy Powell were recognized for improvements in the hospital employee blood drives.

“Since June 2008, the Western Baptist blood program has increased blood donations from an average of 27 units per blood drive to an average of 46 units per blood drive,” said Red Cross donor recruitment representative Anthony Tinin. “That is a 70 percent increase over a three-year period.”

Tinin said Taffer and Powell have hosted 12 blood drives in three years, collecting 560 units of blood from employees.

Groundbreaking ceremony for new Paducah Middle School

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - The Paducah Independent Schools Board of Education is holding a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Paducah Middle School on July 7.

The ceremony will be held behind the middle school’s current location at 342 Lone Oak Road, Paducah, Kentucky on July 7 from 4 to 4:15 p.m.

Deadline in applying for Ky. unemployment due to storms

If you live in Kentucky and lost work due to storms or floods, the application deadline is Friday for unemployment assistance. The deadline is Friday, June 24.

A total of 22 Ky. counties are eligible for assistance. In western Ky. counties include:

Livingston, Graves, Fulton, McCracken, Carlisle, Crittendon, Ballard, Hickman and Hardin.

The Kentucky office of employment and training says farmers and the self-employed may also qualify, even though they normally aren't eligible for such assistance.

Again,  the deadline to apply for help is Friday, June 24.

Summer Safety Festival on Friday

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - The Paducah Fire Department and Police Department will be hosting a Summer Safety Festival for residents of the Dudley Court Apartments on Friday, June 24.

The apartments are located at 801 McGuire Avenue and the festival will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

“This reinforces our commitment to the community to train and educate children and their parents about fire safety especially before the upcoming holiday," said Paducah Fire Chief Steve Kyle. "Last year at Dudley Court, there were some issues regarding the use of fireworks.  With educational opportunities such as this Summer Safety Festival, we can help the community prevent injuries and prevent fires.”

The fire department will be bringing its fire safety house trailer, Freddie the Fire Truck and pumper trucks. Families will have the opportunity to meet public safety representatives.

Open house scheduled for new latin school

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - An open house will be held for the new Latin school opening in Paducah in September.

The school open house will be on June 30 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Broadway United Methodist Church located at 701 Broadway in Paducah, Ky.

Memoria Press and the Highlands Latin School in Louisville, Ky. will be opening the Highlands Latin Cottage School in September 2011.

In the fall, the school will offer one-day a week classes in Latin and Classical Studies for homeschoolers of all ages, along with a one-day primary program in phonics, reading, penmanship and math.

Ky. escaped inmate, 2 others in custody

A manhunt for an inmate who escaped from the McCracken County Jail Wednesday night is over this morning.

According to state police, 29-year-old Daryl Scott was last seen at the recreational area of the jail.

Since then, there had been no sign of him.

But this morning, state police confirm he has been captured and is back in custody.

On Friday, June 24, 2011 at 12:47 a.m., Paducah Police Department, with cooperation from McCracken Regional Jail, was successful in apprehending the escaped inmate.  Scott had escaped from McCracken Regional Jail on June 23, 2011. 

Officers from Paducah Police first got information from McCracken Regional Jail regarding the description of a car Scott might be riding in.

According to police, they found the car at 820 Leiberman Street.  And, when an officer tried to approach him, Scott fled.
