US 60 Traffic signals get back plates to improve safety in mall area at Paducah

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to install back plates on traffic signal heads along US 60-Hinckleville Road between Friedman Lane and KY 998-Olivet Church Road, according to a release by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

The back plates are designed help to make traffic signal heads more visible to motorists.  The plates have been effective in helping to help reduce the number of red-light running incidents in the mall area and improve overall safety, according to Keith Todd, Public Information Director.

Motorists should be alert for a traffic signal crew working at intersections along US 60 in the mall area starting Wednesday, June 23.  The work is expected to take about a week to complete, weather permitting.

Todd says about 25,000 vehicles travel through this section of US 60 in an average day.

2 injured in large explosion in McCracken County

A McCracken County couple is injured when their home explodes early Wednesday morning.

Fire officials say Freddy and Debra Reed were in the living room of the home just before 5 a.m. when the entire house exploded.

All that's left of the two-story home is splintered wood, shattered glass, and insulation scattered all over the yard. In the middle of it all there's a charred center where a fire consumed what was left.

"When we got here, the only thing that was on fire was the first, ground floor, floor joist," said Hendron Fire Deputy Chief Doug Cooper.

"The rest of the structure: the walls the upper storey, the roof, everything had been blown clear of the actual structure."

A Kentucky Fire Marshal is investigating, but firefighters suspect a propane leak may have caused the explosion.

The Reeds have been taken to hospitals in St. Louis and Nashville for treatment of burns.
