Paducah Fire Dept. hosting a class on fire fighter survival

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - The Paducah Fire Department is hosting a class on Tuesday about fire fighter survival and preventing line-of-duty deaths.

Deputy District Chief of the Chicago Fire Department Steve Chikerotis will be teaching the class to PFD and surrounding agencies.

The seminar, "Keeping Badges Off the Wall," will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Tennessee Room of the Julian Carroll Convention Center.

Chikerotis had been teaching the class for 25 years and says the leading cause of fire fighter deaths are cardiac arrest, motor vehicle accidents while responding and fire scene incidents like building collapse, falls and flashover.

"Unfortunately each year the fire service has approximately 100 Line-of-duty deaths," said Chikerotis. "The purpose of this class is to enhance fire fighters' skills.

Police need help identifying vandals that damaged Paducah dome

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Paducah police are asking for the public's help in identifying the person or persons who vandalized the dome in downtown Paducah.

According to police, Mark Thompson, director of Paducah's Parks Department called them at 8:28 a.m. on Monday after he found the damage.

Thompson said someone apparently weakened the vinyl wall by poling holes in it with nails then shoved a sign through it, making a large tear. The vandals then threw gravel, eggs and a traffic cone into the dome through that tear.

Police said the damage happened between 1 a.m. Sunday and 8:15 a.m. Monday.

The city bought the dome two years ago after the Executive Inn closed to cover some of the vendors for the annual Quilt Show. Thompson said it has been used for other events as well.

Thompson estimates it will cost about $2,000 to fix the damage.
