Library media center named for Paducah doctor

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -  McCracken County Public Schools and Dr. Laxmaiah Manchikanti of the Pain Management Center of Paducah have partnered to name the library media center at McCracken County High School.

The McCracken County Board of Education entered into a five year agreement valued at $25,000 for naming rights to the library media center, which will be known as Manchikanti Library.

"I am honored to have the opportunity to support the educational endeavors of McCracken County Public Schools," said Dr. Manchikanti. "I believe it is an obligation to assist education across the globe. It is part of my overall strategy to help improve education, which goes hand in hand with my development of schools in India and supporting 1,300 students along with providing scholarship support to many students over the years."

Paducah woman accused of stealing over $5,000 from her grandmother

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS)- The McCracken County Sheriff's Office says a Paducah woman is accused of stealing more than $5,000 from her 85-year-old grandmother.

Kelly Christian, 33, of Paducah, was charged Wednesday with 60 counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument. She was booked and taken to the McCracken County Jail.

The 85-year-old victim, from McCracken County, told police she received her Edward Jones statement and discovered that over $5,000 dollars was missing from her account. Through an investigation, detectives say her granddaughter, Kelly Christian,  forged over 60 checks.

The victim told officers she did not give Kelly permission to have written any of these checks from her Edward Jones account.

Detectives say Christian has been living with the victim for three years.

Christian allegedly gained access to the victim's account by stealing a checkbook from her personal belongings, according to investigators.

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - In celebration of Nurses Week, Baptist Health Paducah recognizes its entire nursing staff for their focus on the needs of our patients.

They strive to provide prompt attention and effective communication, while working in teams to improve performance.

Three nurses were chosen for special honors during a recent banquet. Pool Nurse of the Year is Patty Harrison, House Supervisor of the Year is Neta Tyler, while Charge Nurse of the Year is Sheila King, 3C.

Nurses honored for excellence in quality were Amanda Casebier, surgery; Caylee Zimmer, CCU; Mardena Waggoner, heart center; Priscilla Phillips, outpatient center; Danielle Summers, 4C; Kristie Henson, ICU; Dawn Mohler, 4B; Sheila Korte, 3C; Mary Lee Evers, clinical integration; Freda Thompson, education;  Melissa Orr, emergency department; Morgan DeMyer, Nursery, and Tammy Manea, 5C.

Paducah Public Schools Foundation to host golf scramble

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Paducah Public Schools Foundation are hosting a golf scramble on May 31.

It will be held at Paxton Park. Shotgun start is at 1 p.m.

According to the foundation, even if you are not a golfer, you can support the foundation with a tax deductible donation.

Companies can sponsor a hole for only $300, or donate prizes.

McCracken County earns HeartSafe Community honor

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS)  — McCracken County is the fifth Kentucky county named a HeartSafe Community for its quick response to treat cardiac arrests.

The Cabinet for Health and Family Services and the Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) will present the award during the annual stroke awareness luncheon at Baptist Health Paducah on Tuesday, May 14.

The Cardiovascular Coalition, a group of employees from Baptist Health and other providers, including Mercy EMS, were instrumental in McCracken County’s designation as a HeartSafe Community for response to cardiac arrests.

“The Emergency department and local EMS work together to provide a prompt response to cardiac arrest,” said coalition member Deborah Welsh, R.N, APRN, for Neurology Specialists at Baptist Health. “This award lets people know they are entering a HeartSafe community when they come to McCracken County.”

McCracken County students selected for Governer's School for the Arts

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Several McCracken County students were selected for the 2013 Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts.

The Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA) provides hands-on arts opportunities for high school students who are dancers, actors, instrumental and vocal musicians, creative writers, future architects or visual artists.

Of the 1,600 who students audition for the program, 225 are selected to participate in the three week residential program.

Mo. man accused of using stolen credit cards

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS)- A Missouri man is facing charges out of McCracken County, Kentucky in connection to using stolen credit cards.

Austin McKinnis, 31, of Nixa, Missouri, was charged with fraudulent use of a credit card by the McCracken County Sheriff's Department on Tuesday. 

McKinnis was arrested in January by the Benton, Arkansas Police Department on local charges and transferred to McCracken County Jail on May 6. McKinnis was wanted in McCracken County on an arrest warrant.   

In November, a Paducah man had reported to police his credit card had been stolen and used at local retail stores.  He discovered several unauthorized charges on his card and reported it to the credit card company.  

The man believed his card had been stolen from his wallet at a local fitness club.
