McCracken County students participate in KY Governor’s Scholars Program

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Several McCracken County students will participate in the 2013 Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program.

Heath High School juniors Bradley Baker, Alexandria Montgomery, Brandon Morehead and Sarah Stigall were selected and Ann Wu was named an alternate; Lone Oak High School juniors Jenna Dowell, Jacob Hyde, Miranda Meier and Amanda Schaefer were selected and Justin Anderson was named an alternate; and Reidland High School junior Kaylee McCollum was selected to participate in the five-week summer program.

The Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program provides students the opportunity for academic and personal growth in a challenging, non-traditional experience that balances a strong liberal arts program with a full co-curricular and residential life experience, according to McCracken County Public Schools.

The mission of the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program is to enhance Kentucky's next generation of civic and economic leaders.

Domestic crisis center and PD awarded training grant

Domestic crisis center and PD awarded training grant

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -Merryman House Domestic Crisis Center has been awarded a training grant.

Also awarded are the Paducah Police Department and McCracken County Sheriff’s Department.

The grant is through the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence to ensure Paducah’s citizens are safe.

The training grant provides training and technical assistance necessary to administer and implement the Lethality Assessment Protocol (LAP).

Officials say the LAP is a cutting-edge approach to combating domestic violence through a comprehensive response of law enforcement and service providers like the Merryman House.

“What we know about domestic violence tells us that when a victim reaches out for help, her risk of serious harm or even death increases. We are very fortunate to have the chance to join hands local law enforcement in a way we have never been able to before,” said Mary Foley, Executive Director of the Merryman House Domestic Crisis Center.

Lourdes Paducah 'Iron Mom Half Marathon' to be May 11

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - The third annual Lourdes Paducah Iron Mom Half Marathon is Saturday, May 11, with a start time of 6:30 a.m. 

According to race organizers, the co-ed event starts and finishes along the floodwall near Schultz Park. 

More than 860 runners from 14 states are registered to participate, an increase as compared to previous years.  The deadline to register is noon on Wednesday, May 8. 

City of Paducah Human Resources Director Cindy Medford, Rehab Associates, Lourdes Hospital, and Family Service Society are organizing the annual running event which involves a half marathon (13.1 miles) for individuals and for two-person and four-person relay teams.  Lourdes Hospital is the title sponsor for the race.

Baptist Health Paducah wins national award for ad campaign

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Baptist Health Paducah has received a national award for an advertising campaign.

The award was for the “My Heart Belongs to Baptist" campaign.

BHP officials say they received a silver award in The 2013 Aster Awards, an elite competition recognizing the nation’s most talented healthcare marketing professionals for outstanding excellence in advertising.

According to Baptist Health, launched the campaign in the summer of 2012.

All contest winners are posted on the Aster Awards website.

Kentucky Office of Highway Safety joins NHTSA in promoting motorcycle safety month

FRANKFORT, KY (KFVS) -. (May 2, 2013) – In recognition of May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) joins the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in reminding drivers and motorcyclists to “share the road” conscientiously and courteously to help prevent motorcycle crashes, which remain one of the most prevalent causes of death and injury on Kentucky roadways.

The campaign will include increased enforcement by local police throughout May to make sure motorcyclists and drivers of all vehicles are obeying state and local laws.

Man claims he was 'trying to eat crack,' fights officer

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS)- A Paducah man was arrested on various charges after police say he fought with a Paducah police officer and was apprehended by one of the department's K9s.

Randolph Robinson, 55, of Paducah, was charged with first-degree possession of a controlled substance (cocaine), resisting arrest, third-degree assault (police officer), second-degree fleeing or evading police and disregarding a stop sign.

Paducah police say an officer searched Robinson's back pockets on Friday after being alerted of possible drug activity. Police say Robinson tried to run, then turned and began fighting with the officer.

As the officer tried to handcuff Robinson, he said Robinson continued to try to reach into his front pocket. When Robinson put his hand in his pocket, the officer released K9 "Junior" from his police cruiser. Robinson was bitten on the back of his right arm, and conformed with commands to quit resisting.

Paducah man wanted in connection to check fraud

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS)- Paducah police asking for help in finding a man wanted in connection with a fraudulent check investigation.

According to Det. Matt Smith, Flavious Lee is accused of depositing a fraudulent check in an account at the Baptist Health Paducah Employee Credit Union, then drawing the money out the following day.

The check later was returned to the credit union as fraudulent.

Lee is described as a black male, 6-feet-2 and 200 pounds.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call the Paducah Police Department at 270/444-8550 or Crime Stoppers at 443-TELL. Tipsters also may text their tips to "CRIMES" (274637) by entering "KyTips" followed by their information.

Information leading to an arrest or indictment may result in a reward of up to $1,000.
