PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Reidland High School student, Hannah Alton, has been named a 2013 National Merit Scholarship finalist.
Around 1.5 million juniors in 22,000 high schools entered the competition this year by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. This test serves as an initial screening of those who apply.
The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than 1 percent of high school seniors.
To be a finalist, a student must have a good academic record throughout high school, be recommended by the school principal and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test, among other qualifications.
National Merit Scholarship winners of 2013 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and ending in July.
