Man accused of scamming 7 people out of more than $76,000 | Crime
MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - A man accused of scamming seven people out of more than $76,000 was arrested Monday morning.
The McCracken County Sheriff’s Department received a complaint in June, where someone alleged that they had been scammed by a local businessman, John R. Thompson, 47, of Metropolis, Ill. Thompson gave the person a $17,000 check that could not be cashed due to lack of funds and promised to pay them for more than a year.
The person also had many signed contracts by Thompson promising the money.
The police talked to Thompson about the complaint. Thompson said that it was a business deal that had gone bad and claimed he could back up all of the transactions he had made.
Thompson promised police he would pay back all of the money in a couple of days.
The promises to repay the money lasted for weeks but were never carried through, according to the sheriff's department.
A second person complained that Thompson owed them money as well. Police investigated and found seven different people who had invested money with Thompson totaling more than $76,000.
Thompson later admitted to police that he had not searched for the records that he claimed would clear the situation up.
Thompson was arrested on seven felony counts of theft by deception and was taken to the McCracken County Regional Jail.
