McCracken County Sheriff's Department warns of phone scam

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The McCracken County Sheriff's Department is warning residents of a scam using the department's name and phone number.

Several area residents have received a recorded message saying the call is from the sheriff's department telling them the resident has a traffic court fine due in court and it can be paid by credit card.

The caller ID shows the correct number for the sheriff's department and the number stated on the recording is also correct.  Police say a "spoof card" can be purchased in several locations and businesses.

The traffic court system does not work this way and the sheriff's department advises people the department will not make any phone calls.

This scam seems to be a follow up to one going around a few months ago in which some residents received notices through the mail that they owed traffic court fines in McCracken County.  It gave an address to mail payments and a phone number to call with quesitons.  When called, the number went to a recording saying it was no longer in service.

Anyone who receives questionable phone calls or notices in the mail are asked to be suspicious and verify any allegations of not paying fines.
