Western Ky. man accused of falsely reporting burglary

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - A 47-year-old western Kentucky man has been accused of lying to detectives about a supposed burglary.

According to McCracken County Deputies, Ray Leigh, 47, of Kevil, Kentucky, was charged Wednesday with falsely reporting an incident.

Detectives say back on January 1, McCracken County deputies were dispatched to 9560 Old Highway 60 to a reported burglary.

Leigh reported that he had pulled up to a family member's residence and saw two men fleeing from the home and dropped a television that was allegedly taken from inside the home during the alleged incident.

Leigh then told detectives that he chased the two men, but they were able to flee in a vehicle that was parked up the road from the home.

Sheriff detectives say they believed that some parts of the statement provided was suspicious and had some inconsistencies. Detectives say they also grew more suspicious of the report after reviewing the recorded 911 call and the crime scene.

After an investigation and interviews with the Leigh, it was determined to be a false report.

According to detectives, Leigh admitted during an interview to having staged the incident to make it appear as though the home had been broken.  Detectives say Leigh added that he did it so he could take some money that he knew was left inside the home while relatives were out of town.

Leigh was taken to the McCracken County Regional Jail.
