Couple arrested in connection with theft from 84-year-old Calvert City man | Crime

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - A couple was arrested in McCracken County in connection with a stolen checkbook from a Calvert City man.

Van Neilson Burton, 51 from Paducah, was charged with seven counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument, second degree.

Christian S. Prather, 41 from Calvert City, was charged with 10 counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument, second degree.

On Feb. 20, the Marshall County Sheriff's Department contacted McCracken County detectives in reference to a theft investigation. They say the investigation quickly led Marshall County deputies to McCracken County where the stolen checks were being cashed.

The joint investigation led detectives to the home of Burton. When they arrived, detectives talked to him about the allegations and evidence of the thefts and they say he immediately admitted to being a part of cashing the checks but denied his involvement in the theft.

Also in the home was Prather. Officers say she admitted to the theft in Marshall County as well as participating in passing the checks along with Burton in McCracken County.

According to detectives, Prather was helping the 84-year-old victim take care of things at his home that he could no longer do when she took his checkbook.

Burton and Prather were taken to the McCracken County Jail on Feb. 21 for numerous charges. Prather will be facing the additional charge of theft in Marshall County.
