Paducah hospital awards local middle schools for winning walking challenge

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Heath Middle and Paducah Middle schools received cash prizes in a walking challenge issued by Kohl’s Cares and the Baptist Health Foundation Paducah.

First-place winner Heath Middle received $2,250 during an awards luncheon in the Baptist Heart Center auditorium on Monday. Heath, with 158 students in the challenge, logged 16,938 miles. Paducah Middle won $1,500 for having 228 students log 13,546 miles. The cash prizes were funded by a Kohl’s Cares grant and foundation board member Ronnie James of James Marine Inc.

School officials are required to use the funds to purchase equipment or resources to enhance their health and physical education programs.

New Date for the Paducah Marine Industry River Cleanup Challenge

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - The 7th annual Paducah Marine Industry River Cleanup Challenge will be held Friday, June 7 at Schultz Park (river side of the floodwall, behind the Quilt Museum).

Lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m., followed by a short safety briefing. Teams will be taken to different clean up sites up and down the river banks surrounding Paducah. Organizers hope to fill one sand flat with thousands of pounds of trash by the end of the event.

Gloves and trash bags will be provided, as well as your Marine Challenge t-shirt. Depending on the weather, volunteers should wear long pants and old shoes or boots. (Be ready to get muddy!)  Some life jackets are available, but volunteers are urged to bring their own if they have them.  For added safety, The Coast Guard will have boats on site and EMT's will also be present.

McCracken County earns HeartSafe Community designation

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Baptist Health Paducah nurse practitioner Deborah Welsh, (right), Kaylene Cornell of the Purchase District Health Department and Mercy Emergency paramedic Jeremy Jeffries accept McCracken County’s designation as a HeartSafe Community for its quick response to cardiac arrests.

"This award lets people know they are entering a HeartSafe community when they come to McCracken County," Welsh said.

McCracken County is the fifth Kentucky county named a HeartSafe Community by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services and the Kentucky Department for Public Health.

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS)- The annual Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce Golf Scramble will be held on June 20, 2013.

The event's presenting sponsor is the Orthopaedic Institute of Western Ky.

The event will be held at the Country Club of Paducah. We will keep you up to date as more information is released.

Seniors boys, girls regional basketball games set for May 18

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Graves County will host a senior all-star high school boys’ basketball game at Graves County Middle School at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18, and a senior all-star girls’ basketball game at 3 p.m.

Coaching the boys’ teams will be Terry Birdsong (Graves County), Bruce Lane (Calloway County), Brian O'Neill (Carlisle County), and Henry Edwards (Hickman County). 

Coaching the girls’ game will be Amy Carrico (Graves County), Ember Wright (Carlisle County), Rechelle Turner (Murray), and Joseph Simmons (Marshall County).

Paducah hospital honors staff during Nurses Week

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - In celebration of Nurses Week, Baptist Health Paducah recognizes its entire nursing staff for their focus on the needs of our patients.

They strive to provide prompt attention and effective communication, while working in teams to improve performance.

Three nurses were chosen for special honors during a recent banquet. Pool Nurse of the Year is Patty Harrison, House Supervisor of the Year is Neta Tyler, while Charge Nurse of the Year is Sheila King, 3C.

Nurses honored for excellence in quality were Amanda Casebier, surgery; Caylee Zimmer, CCU; Mardena Waggoner, heart center; Priscilla Phillips, outpatient center; Danielle Summers, 4C; Kristie Henson, ICU; Dawn Mohler, 4B; Sheila Korte, 3C; Mary Lee Evers, clinical integration; Freda Thompson, education;  Melissa Orr, emergency department; Morgan DeMyer, Nursery, and Tammy Manea, 5C.
