Paducah police offer 3-day Junior Citizens' Police Academy | Events

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - The Paducah Police Department is offering a three-day Junior Citizens’ Police Academy program in July.

The free program will be Wednesday through Friday, July 25-27, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The program is for area youth ages 13 to 17 who may be interested in law enforcement as a career. A parent/guardian and participant meeting will be held Tuesday, July 24 at 6 p.m. 

The program includes classroom lectures and hands-on activities. Lunch will be provided each day. The teens will learn about patrol tactics, investigations, and crime scene processing. Students will not be allowed to shoot guns; however, they will be introduced to the types of guns and weapons used by officers and be able to use simulated training equipment. To end the academy, on Friday, July 27, the teens will enjoy bowling and talking with the officers.

“We often hear young kids say that they want to be police officers, but then as they get a little older, it seems their interest wanes," said Paducah Police Chief James Berry. "The Paducah Police Department is hoping that the Junior CPA program will keep that interest alive and help us identify teens who are interested in law enforcement.  We know it’s a great career, and we want to share our enthusiasm."

Those interested can get an application online at www.paducahky.gov or in the lobby of the police department.  Applications should be submitted no later than close of business July 18.
