McCracken Co. Sheriff's Dept. warns of 'computer scam' | News
MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The McCracken County Sheriff's Department would like to warn the public after a woman became the victim of a "computer scam" on October 1.
According to the sheriff's department, the victim received a telephone call from the suspect, who portrayed himself as Daniel Burns, a Microsoft technician. The victim said the suspect told her that her computer had been sending error messages to Microsoft and needed to be repaired. When the victim allowed the person remote access to her computer, he proceeded to remove the virus software from her computer and ultimately got the victim's credit card information.
Shortly after the phone call, the victim said she contacted her credit card company and discovered someone had already tried to use her credit card. Fortunately, the victim's credit card company recognized the credit card charge to be suspicious and refused the transaction.
The McCracken County Sheriff's Department is asking the public to be aware of this scam, which may begin to happen frequently, and not allow remote access to your computer unless you are certain of the origin.
