MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The McCracken County Sheriff's Office says they responded to a two vehicle accident at 12:20 p.m. on Tuesday after semi rear-ends car on the I-24 bridge.
According to the department, both the drivers involved in the accident told them a semi truck with a flat-bed trailer was hauling a backhoe in front of them when the roof of the backhoe became dislodged and fell to the ground on the bridge in the eastbound lanes of traffic.
Steven Alfter, 53, of Ozark, Ill. was driving a 2008 Nissan 350Z when the sheriff's office says he braked in an attempt to avoid colliding with the roof of the backhoe.
Kevin Inman, 36, of Hoopeston, Ill. was driving a 1999 International semi truck and two trailers for Fed-Ex. The department says Inman was behind Alfter and braked too but could not avoid rear-ending the Nissan.
The sheriff's department says Alfter was taken to Western Baptist Hospital with minor injuries. They say the semi hauling the backhoe was not located Tuesday. Deputies say the roof of the backhoe was made of some type of fiberglass or hard plastic and the remains of the roof were removed from the road.
