Kentucky ranks 3rd in the nation for dog ownership

(KFVS) - The American Veterinary Medical Association recently released its U.S. Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook, which revealed that Kentucky ranks third for dog ownership with 45.9 percent of households owning a dog.

The survey is conducted by the AVMA every five years and always includes a breakdown of pet ownership by state. The most recent survey, conducted in 2012 but based on Dec. 31, 2011 numbers, reveals that the top 10 pet-owning states are:

  • Vermont - 70.8 percent
  • New Mexico - 67.6 percent
  • South Dakota - 65.6 percent
  • Oregon - 63.6 percent
  • Maine - 62.9 percent
  • Washington - 62.7 percent
  • Arkansas - 62.4 percent
  • West Virginia - 62.1 percent
  • Idaho - 62 percent
  • Wyoming - 61.8 percent

Supply Drive for no-kill animal shelter Sept. 29

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - A supply drive for the animals of Project Hope No-Kill Animal Shelter will be Saturday, September 29 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The supply drive will be at Tractor Supply in Paducah. Project Hope is hosting the drive to collect supplies needed to take care of the animals waiting for adoption.

Daymar College Fast and Furriest 5k, Kids Fun Run

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - The Daymar College Fast and Furriest 5k and Kids Fun Run will be Saturday, Oct. 1.

The event will be at Noble Park and the race starts at 9 a.m.

The city of Paducah says for the safety of the runners, the gates to Noble Park will be closed during the race. Access will be limited to the baseball field parking lot on Park Avenue.

The race will benefit the Project Hope no-kill animal shelter in Metropolis.

Dog Swim at Noble Park pool

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - The Noble Park pool will host a Dog Swim on Tuesday, August 9.

The swim will be from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and dogs must be licensed.

At registration, handlers must bring copies of certification showing each dog is up to date on vaccinations. Handlers must be at least 16 years old.

The event costs $10 per dog.
