KDPH names Baptist Health 'HeartSafe Community'

 

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Baptist Health Paducah has been named a "HeartSafe Community," by the Kentucky Department of Public Health for its quick response to cardiac arrests.

McCracken County is the fifth Kentucky county named a HeartSafe Community by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services and the Kentucky Department for Public Health.

"This award lets people know they are entering a HeartSafe community when they come to McCracken County,"  Baptist Health Paducah nurse practitioner Deborah Welsh said.

Baptist Health Paducah employee retires after 46 years

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - A longtime Baptist Paducah Health employee is retiring.

Certified Pharmacy Technician LaDon Gamblin was the longest-serving current employee with 46 years of service.

According to BHP, the worked for every pharmacy director since the hospital was established.

Gamblin says she now plans to travel, garden and spend time with family.

Study: Tourism spending in western Ky. rises in 2012

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -  An annual survey of tourism spending in Kentucky shows an increase in the Western Waterlands region in 2012. All nine of the state’s tourism regions registered gains for 2012 compared with 2011, according to Western Waterland in Grand Rivers.

“Just in our region alone with the 15 westernmost counties, we had a direct economic impact of approximately $498 million, a 5.5% increase from 2011,” said Marinel Larkin, Executive Director of Kentucky’s Western Waterland. “The dollars spent by visitors have strengthened our region’s economy by creating jobs, supporting local businesses from gas stations to retail stores and generating tax revenues to support our community.”

McCracken schools showcase art at Governor's Derby Celebration

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - McCracken County Schools recently were among 30 schools across Kentucky to have student-created artwork featured during the Governor’s Derby Celebration.

The “Derby Blankets” were featured at the Old State Capitol during the celebration on May 4 in downtown Frankfort.

 

According to the school district, students created the works for the Kentucky Arts Council’s “Derby Blankets” project by painting canvases to be used as tablecloths on picnic tables at the event. Each table on the Old State Capitol grounds was fitted with a horse head and tail.

The painted canvases, or “Derby blankets,” were draped across the table to complete the look. School officials say this is the fourth year that schools have been invited to participate in the celebration.

Teens invited to make a difference this summer at Lourdes

Teens invited to make a difference this summer at Lourdes

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Lourdes is accepting applications for their summer program. The program runs from June 4-July 26.

The summer program is for teenagers who are interested in learning more about the healthcare field and eager to give back to others while learning new skills.

 All applications must be in by May 6. 

“Teen volunteers are a great resource and we are excited to have our teens join us in achieving our healing mission,” said Shannon Courtney, Volunteer Coordinator for Lourdes. Opportunities within the hospital for teens include: clerical needs such as filing, sorting, organizing, restocking items, checking in on patients to fill water containers, restocking linens, assisting patients with their call button/remote and much more.

“This is a great way to invest in our future health care associates through mentoring, teaching new job skills and the enrichment of meeting the needs of others through giving,” said Courtney.

WKCTC offers estate planning workshop

WKCTC offers estate planning workshop

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) – West Kentucky Community and Technical College is hosting an estate planning workshop on May 16.

Medicaid planning, Veteran Administration benefits and cover trust considerations will be covered at the workshop.

The instructor for the day is Elizabeth A. Wieneke from  Metropolis.

She is an attorney with Whitlow, Roberts, Houston & Straub, PLLC, in Paducah. 

According to the college, here practice focuses on the areas of estate planning and administration, elder law, real estate and property law, and business and corporate law. 

Wieneke received her jurisprudence doctorate from the Southern Illinois University School of Law in 2007.

The workshop begins at  6 p.m. in the Emerging Technology Center, room 140.  The cost to attend the workshop is $10.

Reidland student serves as legislative page in Frankfort

Reidland student serves as legislative page in Frankfort

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Reidland High School has announced one of its students was one of 138 Kentucky students selected by the Family Resource and Youth Services Coalition of Kentucky (FRYSCKy) to serve as a legislative page in Frankfort.

Diana Medina recently served as a page for Senator Bob Leeper. She was selected based on a submitted application and artwork.

According to the school, students from around the state shared in the Legislative Page Days program to learn, assist and experience what happens when legislators come together in Frankfort.

The FRYSCKy Coalition is a nonprofit organization that provides legislative advocacy, training and support for the FRYSC coordinators and their staff in Kentucky.

This is the 5th year that the FRYSCKy Coalition has sponsored the Legislative Page Days in Frankfort.
