McCracken County High School names activities director

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - McCracken County High School has named Kris Garrett as activities director.

Garrett has served in McCracken County schools since 2002 as a social studies teacher at Heat High School. He also served as Heath High School athletic director for five years.

"Kris has the vision to create one of the most outstanding  high school athletic programs in the Southeast, " said Superintendent Nancy Waldrop. "We're excited to have him in this important position."

Garrett received his B.S. in history and M.S. in school administration from Murray State University. While at Heath High School he coached basketball, baseball and golf teams.

McCracken County High School will open in the fall of 2013, bringing together students from Heath, Lone Oak and Reidland high schools.

Howie Morehead named assistant principal of Reidland Middle School

REIDLAND, KY (KFVS) - Reidland Middle School recently named a new assistant principal.  

Howie Morehead is the new assistant principal and has worked in the McCracken County Public School system for seven years as a science and social studies teacher at Reidland High and Reidland Middle Schools.

"We are excited to have Howie Morehead as the new assistant principal of Reidland Middle School," said Susan Nelson, principal. "Mr. Morehead will work with all students, families and staff to ensure the success that Reidland Middle has come to expect."

Morehead holds a bachelor's degree in biology, a master's degree in management of technology and a Rank I in educational leadership.

During his time at Reidland High and Middle schools, Morehead taught biology, integrated sciences and social studies. He also served as coach for baseball, basketball, football and track.

Paducah Latin school names new K-2 Primary teacher

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Paducah Highlands Latin School has announced they have a new K-2 Primary Program teacher.

Janine Zerger received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre from Missouri State University and a Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction - Children's Literature from Penn State University. She has been married to her husband, Mark, for 23 years. Having home schooled for four years in the past, Zerger's daughter, Megan, is now a sophomore at Ballard Memorial High School and son, Jacob, is an 8th grader at Ballard County Middle School.

Besides a 20-year career in theatre and concert promotion, Zerger also previously served as the coordinator of the Gifted and Talented Drama Program for two years for the McCracken County School District, and has also worked as a substitute teacher in McCracken County.

Two WKCTC students selected for KPTA All-Academic Team

Two WKCTC students selected for KPTA All-Academic Team

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Two physical therapist assistant students at West Kentucky Community and Technical College were recently selected to the 2012 Kentucky Physical Therapy Association All –Academic Team.

The KPTA partnered with RehabCare to select the students from Kentucky’s Physical Therapist Assistant and Doctorate of Physical Therapy Programs.

Brandi Bennett of Livingston County and Rachel Halicks of McCracken County were two of only ten students selected for the award. This is the largest number of student admitted to the team from WKCTC since the award began in 2010.

Students are chosen for the competitive team based upon academic and clinical performance, extracurricular, campus and community service activities, participation in physical therapy-related activities and organizations, and a personal statement discussing the student’s career goals and the importance of being an advocate for the physical therapy profession.

Teachers participate in Purchase Area Writing Project at MSU

GRAVES COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Some 19 western Kentucky teachers participated in the Purchase Area Writing Project at Murray State University during the summer of 2012.

The four-week long workshop is dedicated to helping primary, middle, and secondary teachers in all content areas to build student success in writing by building their own writing skills. Teachers participating in PAWP this summer and their school districts are:

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Marshall County resident Maribel Phillips has been selected as the Student Affairs student of the month at West Kentucky Community and Technical College.

Phelps says she is thankful for the award and sees it as another opportunity towards her future endeavors.

The student of the month program is designed to give recognition to students who have had substantial accomplishments on campus. Recipients must be enrolled students at WKCTC, maintain a 2.0 GPA, and be involved in campus student organizations.

Phelps is a sophomore business administration major, and very active on the WKCTC campus. She is passionate about other cultures, and serves as part of the Hispanic Culture Club, the Student Government Association, and was a student panelist at the Annual Globalization and Diversity Conference at Richmond Community College in Decatur, Il.
