Students work at Baptist Health as part of Lone Oak High School's Day of Caring

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Lone Oak High School seniors Ben Caito and Zach Douglas read to children at Western Baptist Child Development Center.

The reading was part of the high school’s Day of Caring. Students worked at the daycare center and in the hospital on Monday.

Lone Oak Middle School wins MATHCOUNTS Competition

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - The Lone Oak Middle School MATHCOUNTS team took top honors in the team competition at the recent MATHCOUNTS regional competition. 

Lone Oak Middle School students Zach Althouse, Roberto Dos Remedios and Drew Schofield won 1st - 3rd place respectively in the individual competition.

The team will advance to the state competition in Lexington in March. This marks the 18th year a Lone Oak Middle School team has qualified for the state MATHCOUNTS competition.

MATHCOUNTS is a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of competitions.

Lone Oak Middle student wins district spelling bee, headed to state bee

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Lone Oak Middle School student Zach Althouse is the 2013 district spelling bee champion.

The McCracken County Public Schools district spelling bee was held on Feb. 19 and featured representatives from the district's elementary and middle schools. Althouse took top honors as champion and Heath Elementary School student Camryn Mason-Merriweather was named runner-up.

As champion, Althouse will represent McCracken County Public Schools at the Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee, held in Louisville as part of the Kentucky Derby Festival.

Reidland student serves as legislative page in Frankfort

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, KY (KFVS) - Reidland High School has announced one of its students was one of 138 Kentucky students selected by the Family Resource and Youth Services Coalition of Kentucky (FRYSCKy) to serve as a legislative page in Frankfort.

Diana Medina recently served as a page for Senator Bob Leeper. She was selected based on a submitted application and artwork.

According to the school, students from around the state shared in the Legislative Page Days program to learn, assist and experience what happens when legislators come together in Frankfort.

The FRYSCKy Coalition is a nonprofit organization that provides legislative advocacy, training and support for the FRYSC coordinators and their staff in Kentucky.

This is the 5th year that the FRYSCKy Coalition has sponsored the Legislative Page Days in Frankfort.

Paducah School of Art announces survival skills exhibition

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Paducah School of Art has announced an exhibition of student paintings, drawings and photographs in its “Survival Skills for Artists” class to be on display in the Etcetera Coffehouse.

The display will available for viewing from February 21 to March 21 with an opening reception scheduled for 4-6 p.m., Saturday, February 23.

Participating students are Meg Mahoney of Marshall County, Jared Yetter and Shanden Simmons of McCracken County and Daniel Arguera of Graves County.

Etcetera Coffeehouse is located at 320 North 6th Street, in Paducah’s LowerTown Arts District. Hours are: Sunday, 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.; Monday – Thursday, 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.; Friday: 7:30 a.m. - 10:30 pm; and Saturday, 8 a.m. - 9:30 p.m.

Paducah Hospitality Assoc. presents scholarships, awards, new officers

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - The Paducah Hospitality Association began 2013 with its annual awards dinner and installation of officers.

Steven Vest, Publisher of Kentucky Monthly, was the featured speaker at the banquet held at Walker Hall in Paducah.

Tonya Grady of Paducah and Marcus Phelps of Benton, outstanding students in the WKCTC Culinary Arts Program, received PHA Charles Armstrong Scholarships.

Linda Crowe-Curtis, Whaler’s Catch Catering, was awarded the Bobbi Holman Award for her years of service to the community. The Bobbi Holman Award, named for the late Paducah restaurateur, is the highest honor a PHA member can receive. Ruby Armstrong and Bennett Chambers received Spirit of Hospitality honors.

The new slate of officers is as follows: President Eddie Grant, Barkley Regional Airport; Vice President Susan Edwards, National Quilt Museum; Secretary/Treasurer Darrel Gargus, Drury Hotels.

Reidland student named National Merit Scholarship Finalist

Reidland student named National Merit Scholarship Finalist

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - Reidland High School student, Hannah Alton, has been named a 2013 National Merit Scholarship finalist. 

Around 1.5 million juniors in 22,000 high schools entered the competition this year by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. This test serves as an initial screening of those who apply.

The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than 1 percent of high school seniors. 

To be a finalist, a student must have a good academic record throughout high school, be recommended by the school principal and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's earlier performance on the qualifying test, among other qualifications. 

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2013 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and ending in July.
